New .NYC Domain Registrations – February 2018 Review

This is the second in a series of monthly articles detailing new .NYC domain registrations: looking at registration trends and categories, while also highlighting any premium .NYC domain registrations along with any obscure names I find. The NYC Open Data initiative was the original source of the NYC domain registration data. February is an interesting month for domain registrations. It's a short month and it follows one of the most depressing weeks of the year - one where resolutions have been broken and the credit card statements have arrived showing the full damage of the holiday spending. February 2018 .NYC Domain Registrations Total .nyc domain registrations added: 847 This is compared with January's 875, but don't forget February has 3 fewer days, so for a 10% drop in the number of days (31 to 28) we only saw a 3.2% drop in total new registrations (875 in Jan to 847 in Feb). View the full list of February 2018 NYC domain registrations here. This compares…

BuildTheBlock.nyc – High profile use of a .NYC domain

A few years ago HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver showed a popular segment where Oliver mocked Bloomberg for his PR firm registering 400 .nyc domains to protect his image. With such a high profile piece, the result was a bump in registrations and more importantly, awareness of the .nyc extension. Many people were introduced to something other than .com for the very first time. While since then, there have been lots of sightings of .nyc domains in use and continued adoption, there hasn't been further high profile displays of domain use by large NYC based businesses or organizations. That is until today. While watching CBS2 news this morning, I noticed every commercial break included an ad with the ending screen being a call to action, to go to a .nyc website. The ad was sponsored by the New York City Police Foundation and highlights an initiative by the NYPD to promote neighborhood policing. The initiative is called 'Build The Block' and their natural domain of choi…

New .NYC Domain Registrations – January 2018 Review

With the start of 2018 now well underway, resolutions, goals, plans, and dreams are all tested. In the online world, new domain registrations usually signify the first step towards developing an idea. I hope to post an article each month detailing new .NYC domain registrations, looking at registration trends, categories, while also highlighting any premium .NYC domain registrations along with any obscure names I find. The NYC Open Data initiative was the original source of the NYC domain registration data. January 2018 .NYC Domain Registrations Total new .nyc domain registrations added: 875 View the full list on January 2018 NYC domain registrations here. As the table above shows, there's a healthy mix of organizations and individuals registering .NYC domain names.   Premium .NYC Domain Registrations in January 2018 The following names were domains originally reserved by Neustar (the .NYC registry) and later made available at premium tiered pricing. A New York City size and type of marketing campaign for .NYC

This YouTube video published on April 21, 2015 expertly outlines the genesis of the .NYC TLD. Sadly it has 33 views, no comments and not a single thumbs up in two and a half years! Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) produced the show called Represent NYC and this episode focused on the then-new .nyc domain, with Manhattan Borough President, Gale Brewer as the host. Gale did a great job interviewing her three guests which included Betsy Bober Polivy (Founder of Manhattan Sideways, sideways.nyc), Ken Biberaj (VP at Russian Tea Rooms, russiantearoom.nyc and Community Board 7 member) and Anna Guzman (Business Development Manager at Neustar, ownit.nyc). In the humble style of most public television productions, the video dives into discussing what is .nyc, the technical and marketing role of Neustar and a few case studies including Betsy's sideways.nyc, a website devoted to promoting NYC businesses located on the side streets of the city. For such a large, bustling and often…

You had me at, “You put your capital at risk…”

George Kirikos recently wrote a forum post on NamePros about the types of phrases prospective buyers use in their emails when inquiring about a domain name. Below is the list: I'm a student We're a non-profit Be reasonable I'm a broker We have a client I'm starting a blog We don't have a large budget I'm a serious buyer If you have a list of other domains This email is not spam As both a seller and buyer, the list doesn't surprise me. I've seen many of them in emails I've received and have used some of them (most times legitimately) as a potential buyer. While George mentioned he thinks people should avoid using those phrases in their emails - I really don't mind them! After all it's a potential customer. Raymond Hackney published a follow up post to the NamePros thread at thedomains.com called, "You had me at Scumbag". It described a domain inquiry he received where the sender said “I know all you so called investors are just scumbags …

$335 Premium NYC Domain Name Sale

To celebrate the New Year and to help me focus a little more on key projects, I've separated 183 domain names and placed a $335 Buy It Now price on each of them. Welcome to the end of year NYC domain name sale. The categories of names include: Brandable, Products and Services 3 Letter Acronyms First Names Last Names Why the sell off? Although I've invested in domain names in the past, my accumulation of .NYCs wasn't planned. I was involved in the original .NYC auctions in October 2014 and was successful in outbidding everyone for a few domains including kids.nyc and students.nyc among others. Since then, I've picked up other premium names (including free.nyc) which have all had a financial toll. Until these projects are fully developed they won't be income generating and so my ongoing accumulation of .NYC domains has been both to flip (to fund my other projects) and because I keep discovering other great NYC domains that I want to ultimately develop!…

OWNIT.NYC Looks Back at 3 Years of .NYC

Recently OwnIt published an article called History Has Its Eyes on You .NYC in which the last 3 years of this city TLD is summarized. It's an interesting travel through time reviewing the .NYC's place among other cityTLDs, the success of the Best of Boroughs campaign and a look at the range of businesses, not for profits, individuals and other entities being a part of it and how premium domain sales are shaping up for the city and the registry. The article described the premium .NYC domain sales: It was just a year ago that we kicked off .nyc’s second year anniversary with the release of thousands of “premium” .nyc domain names.  A premium .nyc domain name has a higher intrinsic value than the average domain name, and is likely to be in far greater demand. To date, over 515 premium .nyc domain names have been sold to New Yorkers through the world’s leading domain retailers, with a collective value of over $595,157 -- making .nyc domains some of the hottest tickets ar…

psalumni.nyc – A TV commercial featuring John Leguizamo

I rarely have time for TV but Sunday morning is when I find 30 minutes to flip through the local channels during breakfast. Today I was pleasantly surprised to see a commercial for p.s.alumni featuring John Leguizamo (yes, I checked the spelling twice) and highlighting their .nyc website psalumni.nyc. p.s.alumni is New York City's public school alumni network, connecting millions of NYC public school alumni to current students as mentors, volunteers, and powerful advocates for schools & students. John Leguizamo attended school in Jackson Heights and Corona in Queens and he discusses getting into acting while in public school. As a High School teacher myself in Flushing, Queens - I am attracted by the vision and goal of p.s.alumni but the teacher in me objects to their use of lowercase letters at the start of their organization's name! This is yet another example of the .NYC domain space expanding organically. .NYC's are perfect for organizations to em…

Advertiser uses .NYC Domain in New York Post Ad

It's not my regular read, but as I sat down at Dunkin' Donuts during lunch, I flipped through a copy of the New York Post that someone had left behind. Something on page 22 really stood out to me. I now realize that my subconscious is constantly scanning all text looking for ".nyc" and that the discrete URL in the last ad on the page may not be so obvious to everyone. C.C. Rental paid for a color ad so maybe they could have designed the domain text with a pop of color or at least underlined it. Even so, it's another welcome example of .NYC domain names being developed, used and publicized. Our NYC domain name gallery shows a few examples of .NYC websites in the wild and I have many more pics I'll be uploading soon. This was a nice example of .NYC site being advertised in a fairly popular local newspaper - Good for you CCRental.nyc although I did notice you are redirecting people to ccrentalnyc.com ! If you see any .NYC domains out in the wild (including …

One of my favorite premium reserved .NYC domains now registered

Over 4,000 .NYC domains were previously reserved and became available a year ago on October 10th 2016. Although all .NYC domains have regular renewal prices ($20-30/year) the premium domains came with an initial premium registration fee ranging from $350 - $7,000 depending on the domain "tiers". Tiered pricing is slightly different at competing registrars and using GoDaddy as an example Tiers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were priced at $7,000, $3,500, $1,400, $700 and $350 respectively. Well I've been watching one particular tier 1 ($7,000) domain for over a year - and it was just registered earlier today - and not by me! The domain was news.nyc. I think this name is amazing for many reasons. It's short, generic, meaningful. As an investment this type of name will only appreciate and will always be in demand. There are many end users who may be interested in the domain - newspapers, radio, TV. News.nyc could springboard a smaller business into the spotlight in terms of marketi…

One person spent $86,800* on 21 NYC domains

Just over a week ago I reported how Sex.nyc and Beautiful.nyc were both purchased by the same person, for about $7,000 and $3,500 respectively - well it now appears that this person has struck again. The spending spree started with sex.nyc and beautiful.nyc on October 22nd and continued through October 31st with additional 19 NYC domain name purchases, bringing the total spent to approximately $86,800. Below is the shopping list Domain Approx. Price* Date Registered Tier aa.nyc $7,000 October 31, 2017 1 united.nyc $3,500 October 31, 2017 2 sales.nyc $3,500 October 31, 2017 2 everything.nyc $1,400 October 31, 2017 3 jet.nyc $3,500 October 31, 2017 2 gym.nyc $3,500 October 27, 2017 2 bus.nyc $3,500 October 27, 2017 2 clubs.nyc $3,500 October 27, 2017 2 beauty.nyc $3,500 October 27, 2017 2 dates.nyc $3,500 October 27, 2017 2 socialmedia.nyc $3,500 October 27, 2017 2 …

Sex.nyc sells and so does Beautiful.nyc

Earlier today I noticed two premium NYC domain purchases - sex.nyc and beautiful.nyc. Both these domains were previously unregistered and were registered yesterday, directly with GoDaddy, as premium purchases. They've now been added to the NYC domain name sales chart. What's particularly notable about the sales is that they were purchased by the same person (whois) and that they sold for approximately $7,000 (sex.nyc) and $3,500 (beautiful.nyc). While not quite in the same league as Sex.com, which sold for $13m seven years ago (almost to the day - 10/27/2010) to a company called Clover Holdings Ltd., many may consider the $7,000 price tag reasonable. These prices haven't been confirmed by GoDaddy or the registrant, but I believe that they are accurate approximations based on the premium tiers that theses names were originally labeled as and the amount GoDaddy has been charging for NYC domains within the tiers.

Sex.nyc - Tie…

Voting Now Open – .NYC Best of Boroughs Contest

On 9/13 .NYC's Best of Boroughs Contest opened and called on all businesses, organizations, community members and individuals with a .NYC website to share their story and compete for bragging rights within their borough. As of 12am on 9/20 the submission deadline closed and the small one week window garnered 79 submissions across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island - take a look. So far leading Manhattan in the community category is the 100 Gates Project (100gates.nyc) with 88 votes. It's interesting to see such a diverse group of entrants across all boroughs. As part of the 2020studio.nyc's entry, they stated: I wanted the entire world to immediately know firsthand that this company was right in the thick of things: Directly right in the Universal Mecca of the Creative World by having a .nyc web address. In answering, "What inspired you to make this website or entity?" LuckyHoney.nyc responded: As a pilates instructor and production fit …

.Miami promotes its cityTLD with two videos

Last month OnlineDomain covered this news and while Neustar's Best Of Boroughs contest is well underway (now in its voting phase) I thought it was worth looking at how different cityTLDs are promoting themselves. Here are the videos Minds + Machines (.Miami's registry provider) produced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSazel9FspE   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgKDGN2lBHw My initial reaction with the first video was to reject #1 selling point to be forward the .miami to the .com (shouldn’t people who love Miami or any other city/cityTLD forward the .com to the .city?). After watching the whole video (and the second video) I think it differentiates well. It’s compelling for those who want a quick marketing option, web-forwarder (to old site or social media profile), email update, to show their pride for their city. Maybe these first steps lead to more sites being built on the .miami domain (as shown in the second video). So maybe these types of …
